Get Started To Get Great 12/04/24
What is something you have always wanted for yourself? Where have you wanted to go? Who do you want to become? What is your recurring dream if you had zero excuses for why it is impossible? You see, if you never start, you will never come to realize what is possible. Letting your ego and self-confidence get in the way can keep you from excelling. Fear of failure or what others may think has stopped you one too many times. It’s time to be less afraid of failing and more afraid of never starting.
The clock keeps ticking whether you start or continue to defer your dreams. You won’t be an expert at anything on your first attempt, but you will never become an expert if you never try, and the ball is always in your court. You have a choice to keep adding to your efforts or adding to your regrets. You do not have to do everything great to start but you must start to be able to become great. Decide what you really want for yourself and get started. Get great.
Cheers to getting started to be happy and healthy inside and out!
Be Thankfully Human 11/27/24
The holidays can be overwhelming, but only if you let it happen. The family time and the feast may have you on edge about your wish to be happy and healthy inside and out. This is totally normal, and you are human. Keep in mind that the memories from the past and the new ones you are making should be the focus of Thanksgiving. Savor both the food and the family time and ditch the pressure to have everything be perfect because the most of your “remember whens…” are usually from those times when things were not perfect.
Live in the moment and enjoy people around you. Be mindful of what you put on your plate but don’t restrict yourself from every less-than-perfect choice. Enjoy in moderation. You are not giving yourself permission to eat everything in sight in excessively large quantities. You really only need three bites of a specific food: one for the first burst of flavor, the second to savor it, the third to finish with gratitude. Enjoy a few laughs between bites. Please appreciate the blessings at your Thanksgiving gathering while you simultaneously nurture your well-being in the festivities. Remember where you started and how far you have come so far. It most likely won’t be perfect but remain thankfully human that you are able to enjoy bits and pieces of it.
Cheers to being thankful and human to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Do, Be, Get Better 11/20/24
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” - Maya Angelou
This thought can be applied to so many different situations and let’s take it a couple steps further. To do better means to accomplish more or reach a higher standard. To be better means consciously shifting your mindset to be a healthier version of yourself. To get better you need to embrace both strategies. It also takes consistency and focusing on continuous improvement.
Small endeavors add up to getting better. It can be one more rep in the gym, one less soda or piece of candy, one more block added to your walk, or just a little more effort in your daily tasks. When you don’t feel like doing it or you are frustrated with being stuck in a rut, roll up your sleeves to change that current situation to do, be and make it better. Even the tiniest of extra effort can be part of your journey to improve your habits. Bettering yourself in one way may also guide you to progress in other spaces too.
A few key points to do, be and get better include focusing on your habits and health goals, adapting your mindset to overcome obstacles, and taking small steps to make changes over time by breaking down daily routines. The result will be exponential momentum. Keep it simple and don’t make it more difficult than it is. Take a deep breath and do a little better, be a little better and you will get a lot better.
Cheers to better to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Maturing Daily 11/13/24
You will never be this age again. As hard as you may try to hide it, deny it or fake it, you will continue growing older. Hooray! The alternative is not growing older and enjoying new challenges and experiences, whether or not you are ready for them.
It is fascinating how everything changes as time goes by. Some of you may wish things would stay the same, but that is just wishful thinking because things obviously evolve and transform. For a fun little exercise, just look back at your old hairstyles and the clothes you wore 15 or 20 years ago to see how time marches on. Your memories versus current daily experiences look different, and this underlines the fact that time does not stand still so why not cherish today as you know it? As cliché as it sounds, stop and smell the roses.
You are always busy, and you may be unsettled with your circumstances. Let it go! Maturing is understanding that nobody else owes you that idealistic life that you once visioned. You decide what new memories you want to make as you mature. Make a point to spend time with your friends. Explore new stuff that brings you joy. Keep learning. Prioritize what is important to you today so you can make more fond memories to look back upon in the future. You will never be this age again so accept it and focus on making new memories.
Cheers to aging and maturing to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Influential Friends 11/06/24
“Show me your friends, I’ll show you your future” – Dan Peňa
Have you ever thought that some of your friends may be your foes? Have they ever held you back from reaching your full potential? It is important to assess whether your friendships make you better or weigh you down. You don’t have to ditch those friends completely, but aligning yourself and your time with others who have similar ambitions will do wonders for your progress. Evaluate whether you are moving forward or standing still. If your friends eat junk, waste time, make excuses for their circumstances, etc., you are also more likely to do so. If your friends are healthy go-getters who set goals and work diligently to meet them, you are just like them too.
Gut check yourself on whether you have started to have the same mannerisms, behaviors, and share similar thoughts as you five closest friends. Try to surround yourself with those who support you and inspire you. Sometimes it’s best not to fit in with the crowd while you are building new connections and creating opportunities to improve your own well-being. Bonus: make it a mutual experience and try to reciprocate the inspiration, share success stories, and give positive reinforcement within your circle. Genuine friendships are a choice with mutual benefits, not an obligation to stay loyal because you are afraid of losing something. Trust those you have similar or even higher values because you become similar to those with whom you surround yourself.
Cheers to supportive friends to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Balanced Blood Sugar Halloween 10/30/24
Halloween is a fun time of the year for some. It is also be the scariest time for others, especially with the potential for sugar overload. Candy is everywhere you look, and it seems nearly impossible to avoid it without eating “just one” of those cute little candy bars, which turns into three or four multiple times per day, which turns into blood sugar peaks and valleys, which turns into crazy mood swings from hyper to hangry. Food is supposed to nourish your body, and you don’t have to avoid the candy completely but keep it in check not only for the weight gain, but for the health of it. Sugar disrupts your metabolism and all the cells that work so hard to keep you healthy.
Candy doesn’t have to be forbidden, but your blood sugar balance is the key. By performing a few tricks, you can enjoy some of the treats without a severe sugar spike and crash. Trick #1: eat some protein with the candy to keep your blood sugar from spiking. Yes, this involves extra calories but it will help slow down how fast the sugar rushes into your system. All calories are not created equally. Trick #2: you’ve got to move it move it. Go for a short walk instead of sitting down so that your body uses up some of that sugar right away instead of letting it get stuck in the blood and linger. Trick #3: drink water like it matters because it does. The water will help your body filter through the sugar faster and keep you hydrated so drink some before and after you enjoy the candy. Learning how to balance your blood sugar with these easy tricks will help minimize the spooky parts of Halloween candy.
Cheers to a blood sugar balanced Halloween to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Fortunate 10/16/24
Let’s talk about the fortune you have if you are able to get and stay healthy. Some are not as fortunate because they can’t afford to have a gym membership, don’t have the ability to walk, lack the capability to get up and exercise or the working muscles to be able to lift weights. You, my friend, are fortunate if you have these powers so get going and use that fortune on your longevity. No whining and no excuses. It is a privilege that some do not enjoy, and you should appreciate exercise for making you feel good, stronger, and powerful.
Exercising can and should be fun. It is a way to channel your inner child and get some adult play time like you did on the playground as a kid. You don’t “have to” go to the gym but you might “get to” go to the gym but it is not required. You just need to try a little bit to get better, remind yourself that it is fun, and you are fortunate to be able to do so. View the precious time to improve your health and well-being, not as punishment. Mix in some strength training, a little agility, a dash of flexibility, and watch your fortune grow. You deserve to prosper with results from the fun effort you put in.
Cheers to being fortunate to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Fall Fresh Start 10/09/24
The season is changing, and you can’t ignore it. Just look around you at the changing colors of the leaves, the later sunrise, the earlier sunset, the cooler evenings, the harvest in progress, the lawn needs cut less often, and the pumpkin spice everything everywhere. Rather than looking at it as the beginning of the end and throwing in the towel on your goals, look for the opportunity to get your rear in gear to finish the year strong. Take a few minutes to reflect back on the year so far, observe the present state, and look ahead to renew what you can still accomplish.
Reflect. Look back to evaluate progress on the goals you set. It is important to recognize how far you have come even if you have not achieved everything you set out to do. You will gain some deep insight to help you break things down into manageable steps for the final months of the year. Honesty is the best policy when it comes to this reflection so you can continue or regain your momentum.
Observe. Take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly to create self-awareness of where you are today. Did you fall off your routine in the summer? Do you need to get buckle down a bit to get back into the swing of things? Do you still have the same goals as you did nine months ago? Honesty is still the best policy when you are observing and asking yourself these questions.
Renew. Be clear on what you want to accomplish and rewrite your goals if necessary. If you are on track, simply confirm your intentions and be conscious of the steps you want to take to sprint to the finish line. This year isn’t over yet. The new season is full of opportunities so seize each day with renewed energy.
Cheers to a new season to become happy and healthy inside and out!
With Joy And Gratitude 10/02/24
This week I’m stopping to smell the roses. Part of the overall health journey is when you realize just how lucky and blessed you are when you experience joy. Stop to recognize it. My heart is swelling with gratitude for my family and friends who came together to celebrate our daughter’s wedding, whether it was in spirit or in person in Italy. I cannot thank them enough and it means the world to me. I am more grateful than any of them will ever know. Two families came together and the amount of genuine care among the guests was spectacular.
Friends and family traveled across the world. It would not have been the same without them. For some of them it was their first time flying over the ocean. Others were seasoned travelers, but not for a reason like this one. For my parents who wanted to be there but could not, numerous photos and videos were shared by my sisters and we did Facetime calls to feel closer to them. I'll never forget the support and kindness from everyone. The wedding day has so much anticipation and then it flies by so quickly. What matters is that the dream came true for the newlyweds and the best is yet to come for them. I am grateful they are together.
As a parent, you wish only the best for your children, and I feel I hit the jackpot. It is easy to become fixated on what is not going right or what could have gone better. If you find gratitude for what went well, your perspective definitely changes. Promote your attitude of gratitude to front and center. I am grateful for my family and dear friends who uplift me.
Cheers to gratitude, family, and friends who make you happy and healthy inside and out!
Experience Food 09/25/24
Experiencing food outside your normal environment or culture can be different for everyone. Some see it as adventurous. Others may see it as scary or intimidating to go outside their comfort zone. Someone else may see it as completely off limits, can’t do it, won’t do it. Nonetheless, food is universally used as part of celebrations for all cultures. It often defines your holiday gatherings, parties, and date nights. So, why not expand your palate to find new healthy options whether you are at home or abroad to find pleasure in the process?
The opportunity recently presented itself on a trip to Italy where meals are rarely done on the run. They are calm, extended periods of time enjoyed with others. Their meals are about pleasure as much as they are about nutrition. The food is made with meticulous care and most ingredients are home-grown. By experiencing this change of pace, you can learn about the culture and gain an appreciation for their traditions while getting fabulous nutrition. You may not adopt the exact same taste when you return to your normal routine, but it may expand your thoughts to accepting new recipes or spark some new food prep ideas at home. Food can unify strangers across cultures…if you allow it.
You will tend to eat foods that mean something to you in your traditions, but you can also expand it through these new experiences. Since you eat multiple times per day, you have a chance to link the food to a past celebration, a family gathering, or a special place. Hopefully you can enjoy the food as nourishment for both your body and your soul. Food should be enjoyed while you broaden your appreciation for the internal and external benefits.
Cheers to food that makes you happy and healthy inside and out!
Routines Create Freedom 09/18/24
Routines can direct the chaos of your day to set you on clear paths every day. Having a schedule provides the structure and solid foundation for your daily activities rather than limiting freedom as some may speculate. When things are done consistently over time, you will be moving toward your goals and maximizing your potential. deciding ahead of time frees yourself from last minute and rushed decisions. Doing things the same way repeatedly creates patterns, anticipates difficulties, and finds ways to avoid problems. When you want something to become a habit, you must create a routine, schedule time for it, and make it a priority. This generates the freedom to get it done.
Consider routines to be strategic tools to help you get activities done rather than as severe constraints. Routines offer the consistency and direction required for progress toward a fitness, career, or any personal goal. They help manage your time when you schedule the priorities deliberately and stick to the timeline. By having a predictable routine you can repeat, you remove some of the anxiety of decision making and have control of simple things like the time you set your alarm. You can waste less time and energy wondering about what you should work on or when you will get all your tasks done if they are methodically planned. Schedule in your relaxation and family time too to avoid putting the most important things on the “whenever I can get to it” list. Creating an efficient routine schedule will leave room for activities you truly enjoy, like evening walks, lunch with a friend, planting a garden, reading a book, or whatever gives you the most pleasure. Routines begin with the choice and are maintained by choice.
Cheers to routines to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Remembering This Date 09/11/24
The 9/11 remembrance quote, “We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.”
You probably remember where you were when you got the news on September 11, 2001. Today is an opportunity to be grateful that you were not involved in the tragic events, to pay tribute to the victims and honors the survivors. The 9/11 terrorist attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The events changed the lives of everyone but especially victims' families and friends, survivors, first responders, rescue and recovery workers, volunteers, and millions of Americans and people around the world. A simple, brief moment of silence will put things into perspective.
Cheers to take a moment to remember to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Get It While You Can 09/04/24
The kids are back in school. The days are getting shorter. The seasons are changing. The amount of time you can get natural sunlight is shrinking day by day. Regular sun exposure is the most natural way to get vitamin D. To maintain healthy blood levels, you should try to get 10–30 minutes of midday sunlight on most days. This doesn’t mean go out and sunbathe to burn your skin because exposure time depends on how sensitive your skin is to sunlight and a sunburn is not the answer to a healthy dose.
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps the body absorb calcium, maintain strong bones and teeth, protect against osteoporosis, and support your immune system. Of course you can get vitamin D from your diet and supplements, but getting daytime sun on your skin is a fabulous way to naturally produce it. Additionally, Vitamin D is found in foods such as saltwater fish, milk and cheese, eggs and some green leafy vegetables. There are other benefits such as heart health, hair health, diabetes management, and reduced inflammation. So get out there and soak up the sun.
Cheers to sunny Vitamin D to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Try Something On For Size 08/28/24
Stepping even slightly outside your comfort zone will allow you to assess whether something is suitable for you. College students get to try occupations on for size by taking summer jobs or internships. Many lead to fabulous future opportunities while others confirm what that student may not want to pursue and they only had to endure it for a summer or a semester. Trying a new food or a new walking route can lead to nice surprises. Rather than avoiding a new challenge or opportunity, consider it a test drive and you can decide whether it is a car you want to invest in or take it back to the dealer and hand back the keys. Trying something on for size doesn’t have to be a life-long decision that you can never change.
Trying new things allows you to consider carefully and to decide whether you believe it, or to try using something in order to decide whether you think that it is good for you. Feel free to allow yourself to try on an idea for size and then decide whether you find it plausible. Don’t be scared to make an effort or attempt. As the British say, “Have a go at it.” It is just like trying on a new dress, pair of pants, or a shirt to see if it fits. Sometimes it does, sometimes you don’t buy it (err return many of those online purchases that just don’t fit). You won’t know until you try.
Cheers to trying on something new for size to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Time Or Priorities 8/21/24
Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. Yes, you may have different obligations, constraints, stressors, or responsibilities. Nonetheless, there is no such thing as “I don’t have enough time.” You always have enough time. You may just not have the right priorities. Your health should have priority over comfort.
A priority is something that you do or handle first because it is more vital than other things. If you make something a priority, you deem it the most important thing you must do before everything else. By taking action on the right priorities, you are making better decisions, improving your efficiency and reaching our goals.
The suggested top four things to prioritize:
-
Your health. It is so valuable, it is priceless. M-N-M (movement, nutrition, mindset).
-
Family and relationships. Your family isn’t going anywhere, and you have to nurture relationships to keep them solid.
-
Self-Improvement. Invest in yourself and you will earn massive returns.
-
Money/Work. Financial stability allows for experiences and personal satisfaction for future security.
Cheers to priorities to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Check Yourself 08/14/24
Check yourself before you wreck yourself. This saying suggests that you think about the consequences of your actions before you get yourself in trouble. You can improve your wellbeing if you actively become more self-aware and grounded. It can help you to navigate daily ups and downs to stay healthy, control your appetite, and remain active instead of taking the lazy route. It means asking questions instead of being judgmental and jumping to quick conclusions. It means focusing on your own inner world and doing some quick soul searching.
Checking yourself can mean you become more aware of your emotions before you have knee-jerk reactions. This can lead to expressing your feelings more calmly which aids in minimizing overwhelm. You stay true to yourself with fewer regrets later. When you're in tune with your emotions, the less likely you will respond to situations impulsively. Instead, you can approach challenges with a clear and calm mind, making decisions that are more thoughtful and with more consideration.
In addition to staying in good graces and out of trouble, checking yourself can mean figuring out what makes you happy and doing more of it. You can work on recognizing your personal progress rather than comparing yourself to others. Checking yourself could be reviewing your habits or train of thoughts and how you can improve them. When practicing self-respect, you give kindness to yourself the same way you would extend to a dear friend. Staying in check really can help regulate your stress and overwhelm. Support yourself as you check yourself.
Cheers to checking yourself to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Be A Superhero 08/07/24
You can be an emotional superhero when you can understand your feelings without letting them take over. When you have a strong self-awareness, you can perceive yourself through your unique identity, values, personality, and relationships. This allows you to figure out if something is just a passing feeling or a big truth. Instead of reacting quickly, you can respond thoughtfully. There is always room to grow into a better version of yourself.
You might act differently at work, when with your family, and yet another way when you spend time with friends. Switching among these different personas can make it tough to know your true self and cause stress for you. Understanding yourself can help make decisions confidently and help your overall well-being because you are not fighting your internal belief system and the basic things that motivate you. Trying to be something you are not can be exhausting.
If you want to be an emotional superhero, first identify your needs and priorities by making a list of your non-negotiables, such as healthy eating and daily activity, family time, and work commitments. Make them a priority every day. Also practice lightening up the immense pressure you put on yourself to be the BEST at everything, so you avoid burnout and resentment. Acknowledge that you have limitations. You are ultimately in charge of how you spend your time and energy. By staying true to deep-rooted beliefs and priorities, you will handle your emotions better. You can handle tough times with strength and calmness.
Cheers to being a superhero to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Rah Rah For Routines 07/31/24
Bravo for routines! Whether you believe it or not, your body and your mind thrive on routine. There are often distractions, activities and vacations, which are amazing breaks from the daily grind. They can also cause you to get out of your routine. When you need to get back on track, bring it back to simple basic strategies. It’s OK to slightly swerve onto the rumble strip, but a quick correction is needed to get you back safely on the road, so you don’t go into the ditch.
Consistency with healthy choices creates healthy habits. Routines = habits. When it comes to nutrition, you can set yourself up for success by keeping the packaged junk that comes in a box, wrapper or bag out-of-stock in your kitchen. Instead, stock up on “real” food like fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meat, and whole grains. When you have healthy options readily available, you are more likely to make healthier choices. Don’t let the hangry monster enter your kitchen which can lead you to grab the easiest, fastest, least healthy option and snarf it down without knowing what the heck just happened.
Strive to balance your meals with protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates (think fiber/vegetables) in each meal. You need these ingredients to avoid blood sugar spikes, keep your energy levels steady, and prevent cravings shortly after you have eaten. Sustain yourself with healthy snacks with the same three components to control hunger between meals and avoid that hangry monster. Another healthy routine is keeping some physical activity in your daily routine like a short walk to keep the blood flowing. Consistency and routine are your healthy friends and just what the doctor ordered.
Cheers to routines to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Helping Hands 07/24/24
Helping others proves to the world that you are kind, compassionate, and strong. These are qualities of a great role model and inspiration to others. Being helpful is a fantastic thing to do but doing it so much that you forget to help yourself is not healthy physically or emotionally. To offer Healthy Help, you can do what you can do, but not more than you should be expected to handle. If you do too much, those sweet, feel-good feelings can become sour. You may try to hide what is really going on because you want others to believe you have it all together.
If you are personally an Over-Helper, you may think you don't need others’ help because you can do it all. Realistically, you need it the most because you spend more time and energy solving so many problems other than your own. You may be sacrificing for the “greater good” but you need to care for your own health to avoid getting burnt out, exhausted and overwhelmed. To stay healthy, you can't keep neglecting yourself. You are human and can only do so many things at a time. You need to take that time for yourself to get movement, proper nutrition, and a solid mindset. You should not keep neglecting yourself for the sake of helping others. That doesn’t mean pack your bags and leave all your responsibilities behind but take that time for yourself because your continued health is the most important attribute so you can carry on helping others.
Cheers to helping yourself to be happy and healthy inside and out!
Live Fulfilled With Bliss 07/17/24
The second half of your life should be the time when you don’t have too much to do, and you enjoy it. As always, keep in mind the healthy M-N-Ms: movement, nutrition, and mindset. Take a few moments to visualize how that bliss would feel to you. Decide what actions you need to take to achieve that state sooner rather than later in retirement. Studies show people are happier when they fill their free time with social activities, including spending time with loved ones, exercising, engaging in hobbies, and traveling. Look forward (not backward) to discover meaning during midlife and celebrating accomplishments both big and small. Keep moving forward with a sense that your past has laid a solid foundation for what lies ahead.
To avoid feeling lost without a purpose in later years, consider moving on in stages. By easing off your daily work gradually, you can more smoothly transition and manage the idea of not working and filling your time in other ways. Think positively and share your concerns with others. M is for movement. Aim for physical activity that you enjoy several times per week if not every day. N is for nutrition. Staying healthy includes eating regular meals by exploring healthy cooking options. M is also for mindset. Challenge your mind daily with reading, learning a new skill, Sudoku, or doing puzzles if that fills your cup. Accept that you have done so much up to this point and focus on your next challenge. There is more life to live! Turn your long-held dreams into a reality while staying within your health and budget limitations. Live your best healthy lifestyle and live it blissfully.
Cheers to you being fulfilled with bliss and becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Stop Starting Over 07/10/24
Have you ever had a deja vu moment and caught yourself thinking that something is happening all over again? In these moments, you may be thinking Ugh! And that it is tiring, boring or unpleasant that you are not on track to meet your goals. You are feeling the hassle of the whole process starting all over again. You may have fallen off track, but you don’t have to throw away all the mini wins that you achieved along the way.
It is helpful to reframe the dread of starting over with restart, resume, reset, renew or refocus. Instead of going backwards to the starting line, consider picking it up and bringing it with you to your current spot. When you pick up the starting line, you don’t take the walk of shame all the way back to the beginning. You can start right back where you left off to continue on track toward your goals. By picking up the starting line and bringing it with you, the finish line seems closer. Consistency is clearly an important component when working to accomplish goals but if you fall off track, making a quick correction to get back on course is the best alternative.
A couple cliché quotes will sum it up:
“No matter how hard the past is, you can always begin anew.”
“You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, because 'failure' is not the falling down; it is the staying down.”
Cheers to moving your starting line to become happy and healthy inside and out!
America 07/03/24
As we celebrate freedom and the 4th of July, feel free to read the words or hum along with the famous hymn. The words were written by Samuel Francis Smith in 1831, but the melody is much older and has been used for songs in many countries. It was first sung in public on July 4, 1831, at a children's concert at the Park Street Church, Boston, and published in 1832. Interesting fact: the song uses the same melody as that of the British national anthem, “God Save The Queen.”
America (My Country 'Tis of Thee): 1831
My country, 'tis of Thee,
Sweet Land of Liberty
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain side
Let Freedom ring.
My native country, thee,
Land of the noble free,
Thy name I love;
I love thy rocks and rills,
Thy woods and templed hills;
My heart with rapture thrills,
Like that above.
Let music swell the breeze,
And ring from all the trees
Sweet freedom's song;
Let mortal tongues awake;
Let all that breathe partake;
Let rocks their silence break,
The sound prolong.
Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our King.

Work Precedes Results 06/26/24
The recipe is simple. If you don't put in the work, you won't get the results. Regardless of the form of success or the goal you want to reach, doing the work must come first. Results do not just appear on their own. Focus on the work and the rest (i.e. results) will come. People get lucky from time to time, but luck runs eventually, and luck won't make you feel fulfilled. Normal results don’t come from a slot machine.
Getting results requires doing specific work every time. Recall any positive outcome you have achieved, and you will likely remember how it required your effort, attention, energy, and time. The work can be directly related or unrelated, but it was work well done. Continue investing in the things you care about. Also, if you're not happy with the process and the work, the results won’t make things any better. Be attentive to the process and work you do with the ultimate goal of being happy and healthy in whatever form that means to you.
Cheers to doing the work to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Healthy Lifestyle Standards 06/19/24
Nobody is 100% perfect but if you stick to healthy lifestyle standards at least 90% of the time, you will keep your body and mind healthy inside and out.
Lifestyle Standard #1: Eat with purpose
A healthy lifestyle avoids mindless snacking like a tub of popcorn at the movie theater or a bag of chips in front of the TV. Snacks are fine when you are aware of how much you eat to balance your blood sugar and be mindful of the your meals for the rest of the day.
Lifestyle Standard #2: Stand and walk with purpose
Sitting is the new smoking. Sitting all day every day is as harmful to your body as smoking. Consider how much of your day is really spent sitting versus actively moving. It may take conscious effort to stand more, take the stairs, park further away to get in some extra steps. Over time, it really adds up to enhance your overall health.
Lifestyle Standard #3: Avoid sugar on purpose
It’s true. Your body was not designed to ingest large amounts of sugar on a daily basis. Sugar is hidden in so many foods and beverages that it takes effort to avoid it. Read labels, eat real food and pay attention.
Lifestyle Standard #4: Enjoy a light dinner with purpose
Your evening meal does not need to be the biggest and heartiest meal of the day. The focus should be on enjoying the meal (hopefully with loved ones) centered around protein and veggies to keep it light and healthy.
Lifestyle Standard #5: Exercise with purpose
You should have an exercise routine, just like brushing your teeth daily. Exercise works when you do it as an ongoing habit because the benefits outweigh the slight inconvenience to keep you healthy. Make it part of who you are. Your daily exercise habit can be fun and effective.
Cheers to using daily standards to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Turning Back Time 06/12/24
Have you ever thought, if only I knew then what I know now? It would be fascinating if you could go back and change the past. Despite wishing to return to an era that was very good or to change something bad that happened, you can not turn back time. You may want the chance to do things differently but there are usually no do-overs. Since you can’t return to an exact situation and change it, focus on trying to make the most out of the current situation.
The clock does not move backwards. If you want a chance to live your life differently, make positive changes on the fly in the present moment. You may have events or actions that you regret. You may want to go back and change how you handled a situation. The reality is that we can’t go back in time so you should use those experiences to fuel your current and future actions. Take a moment to reframe the incident, learn, and make better choices in the future. Remember the past but live in the present.
Cheers to living in the present moment to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Hard Now Or Harder Later 06/05/24
Every day you face opportunities to do what is hard or what is easy. Decisions may never be easy but please remind yourself regularly to choose to do what is hard now or be faced with something much harder later. Doing the hard things now makes life easier in the future.
Hard now = easy later. Easy now = hard later.
Let’s focus on staying fit and healthy but the same philosophy applies to most things and some of those will be listed below for reference. Hard now: getting and staying fit to be healthy is hard work. It takes effort to make nutritious meals; willpower to avoid unhealthy foods; hustle to get out of bed early to complete your workout before the day begins; and energy to lace up your shoes to be active after you had a long day rather than sinking into the comfort of the couch. Being fit and healthy means choosing to do what is hard right now.
The option is to choose Easy Now: grabbing dinner from a drive-through is easier than making it at home. Eating whatever looks the most enticing is easier than avoiding it. Sleeping in is easier than getting up at the crack of dawn to exercise. Chilling on the couch at the end of your day is easier than getting up to do something active. With every EASY choice that you make today, you are setting yourself up for a harder result, down the road.
It’s not actually a choice between hard and easy. The real choice you are making is between hard now or even harder later. Being unhealthy and out-of-shape is harder later. You can develop aches and pains or be physically unable to do the things you want to do, which is harder later.
Being fit now is hard. Being obese is harder later.
Being financially disciplined is hard. Being in debt is harder later.
Marriage is hard. Divorce is harder later.
Communication is hard. Not communicating makes it harder later.
You are faced with choices every day. Choose your hard and choose wisely.
Cheers to choosing hard now to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Value Family Time 05/29/24
As the seasons are changing from spring to summer quickly, remind yourself of how precious time is and how quickly it passes. Both of my daughters had birthdays this week so sentimental feelings were flooding in and the realization hit hard that they will never be this age again. Spending quality time with your family during special times and on a regular basis builds emotional bonds and strengthens your commitment to care for each other. It helps solidify your family dynamic and create resilience to develop a strong unit. What a blessing! Make time for those family members (blood relatives or not) who mean the most to you and fill your cup because those in-person interactions give so many benefits of social connection.
Family time has been linked to living a longer, healthier, happier life. It promotes increased personal happiness and satisfaction. Studies have shown that spending quality time with your family can help reduce stress, lead to a healthier lifestyle and lengthen your life. Umm, who doesn’t want those benefits? A solid family unit gives you the foundation to be the best version of yourself to be resilient during tough times. Being physically present with your children or loved ones creates a strong emotional support to carry you through tough challenges.
The memories of the good times are pretty special along with boosting self-esteem and confidence. Studies have shown that individuals with strong family connections are happier and more content. Family traditions are formed when you repeat certain activities that feel special. Practice gratitude for those everyday moments that are easy to take for granted or forget. The little things like taking the trip together or celebrating birthdays are the things you end up cherishing the most. Be intentional with your time to nourish your body and soul with family time.
Cheers to family time making you happy and healthy inside and out!
Better Than Perfection 05/22/24
It sounds cliché but progress is better than perfection. Progress seems ho-hum because it is not as exciting as perfection, but it is more realistic. Striving for perfection can make you feel defeated because it is impossible and can leave you missing the mark on your original goal. Seeking perfection is kind of like trying to catch every rain drop in a storm. Progress builds up and accumulates more results as you gradually make your way toward accomplishing goals. You don't need to chase the elusive ideal of perfection to become happy and healthy inside and out.
Progress requires some change and that is sometimes daunting. Your desired situation may seem so far off into the future. Nonetheless, improvement of and for yourself requires some habit change. It then takes effort to recognize how far you have come. Time is the key ingredient.
Small Amounts of Progress + Time = Continuous Improvement
Results become apparent after you make that new habit, and it becomes easy for you. You are capable of great progress and great improvement over time. It comes from within, and you should review your personal degrees of progress in the right direction. Don’t compare yourself to others. The only comparison that matters is new you vs. old you. Progress isn't about finishing the race. It is taking that next step in the right direction.
Cheers to progress to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Steady In Vacation Mode 05/15/24
When did May become so busy it is now known as Maycember? It includes the end of the school year, graduations, along with summer coming fast. The sun, heat, and bright blue sky get the vacation vibes rolling. Don’t let this derail you from your healthy lifestyle habits and the resolutions you set at the beginning of the year. Staying on track means living a sustainable lifestyle, which may not be perfect, but is consistent.
Remember the M-N-Ms: Movement-Nutrition-Mindset. Commit to a daily routine that incorporates balance and not “on” or “off” your plan to stay healthy with the M-N-Ms. Maycember celebrations and summer vacation are a time for you to be with friends, see new things, and get out of your regular life to refresh, recharge, and renew yourself. It doesn’t mean you throw out all aspects of your normal life out the window. You still brush your teeth and shower on vacation, right? The same should be true for eating and exercising. Be intentional about fueling yourself while enjoying yourself. Healthy may look different on vacation than at home, but it does not have to mean you are cheating. It just means you are showing up in a different way for yourself which is important and meaningful.
Everything does get easier with practice. Start by being aware of your choices and make an improvement. Easy is earned so keep practicing. There is always an opportunity to make a better choice when you look for it. Decide how you want to feel in control of your choices and state your intentions as “I choose…” instead of “I can’t or I’m not allowed to…” Enjoy every bite as you experience new foods and restaurants on vacation. Have fun and experience new healthy activities.
Cheers to a great Maycember and summer to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Action Creates Energy and More Action 05/08/24
You may feel like you are always busy but being busy is not the same as taking action. Doing lots of stuff does not necessarily mean you are taking the right actions to make progress toward your goals. You may have experienced this when you have been in motion, feel like you are just spinning your wheels, but you are not getting anywhere significant. You know that feeling when you are on autopilot going through the motions. Taking action is different because it leads to noticeable progress toward a goal and achieving real results.
Activities can either give you energy or drain your energy. Energy producers include exercise, spending time with friends, hobbies, or learning new things. These improve your mood, focus, and sense of purpose, i.e. making you want to take more action. Energy drainers include demanding commitments, annoying obligations, or too much screen time. These lead to fatigue and perceived stress. Choose activities that fuel your energy to pursue your goals. Minimize those activities that drain your battery. The key is to do things that create energy so that you keep taking action. The same one hour could either fly by if you are enjoying yourself or drag on forever if you are mentally or physically drained. Envision running a marathon rather than a sprint. Pace yourself and keep your energy levels high to complete the marathon. Don’t just sprint through tasks for the sake of being busy.
Meaningful action requires focusing your time and energy with purpose in mind. Small steady steps forward give you that natural high to keep going for it, whatever “it” is for you. Progress happens through consistent effort so you might as well enjoy the process instead of dreading it. To restate the obvious, action requires an output that confidently moves you closer to the results you want. Motion just keeps you busy without getting you anywhere meaningful. When you feel stuck in a rut, ask yourself, am I just being busy? Or am I using my focused efforts to create real progress?
Cheers to energy and actions to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Opportunity Abounds 05/01/24
“Opportunity abounds for those who are willing to step into the heart of uncertainty.” - Todd Henry,
The word abound means to be present in large numbers or in great quantity. Life is full of opportunity. There are multiple opportunities available in a particular situation. You can perceive the opportunity or the obligation. When you find yourself feeling stuck in a rut, turn that frown upside down and look for the opportunity to learn and grow instead of the obligation to “have to” do something.
When you choose to see situations as opportunity vs. obligation, it enables you to seek something better whether it be a new job, a major purchase, a healthier lifestyle, or even retirement. Slow down and be mindful of opportunities around you. Each day has some opportunity in it when you allow yourself to see it. The three key components are: recognize opportunity, grow your knowledge, and be mindful of how you invest your time. Here are some words of wisdom to get you started.
-
Time spent waiting is time spent wasting when it could have been spent building upon an opportunity. Never wait for something to be handed to you before you take action.
-
Expand your knowledge. Read books, listen to experts, and explore what really interests you. Position yourself to see opportunities and seize them when they come knocking.
-
Be a motivated thinker. Look to find meaning in the opportunities that you face.
-
Focus on seeing opportunities. When you face frustration, don’t get distracted by the woe is me syndrome.
-
Sharpen your persuasive communication skills. This can help you sell, influence, and energize yourself and others as you see fit.
-
Execute when you hear even a faint knock of opportunity. As they say, seize the day. Don’t get caught in analysis paralysis to allow your fear of failure to own you. Stop making excuses before you even start.
Choosing opportunity over obligation is an enduring process, but never stop trying to improve your personal health, abilities, and knowledge. Make the most of each opportunity to create a positive difference for yourself.
Cheers to opportunities to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Age Gracefully 04/24/24
Full disclosure: this is not my own original content. Below is an excerpt from an email received this week from a supplement company who shall remain nameless. Granted, they were promoting an ageless greens powder to keep you healthy, but the message about a aging gracefully in a healthy way is spot on. In the pursuit of being happy and healthy inside and out, who wants to be a puffer fish?
So many recent social media cues attempt to paint aging as the ultimate tragedy. Newsflash: aging is OK, and the alternative is the tragedy. There are far worse things than a few fine lines. You might be chasing an "ageless" appearance at the expense of our health when you refuse to embrace the beauty of aging gracefully. The choices are out there to seek that ageless look through surgery, filler, or Botox. While we’re not here to criticize, more and more young women are starting to resemble puffer fish in their quest to defy aging. It’s heartbreaking to see so many young women get their perfect imperfections reshaped, shaved down, or lifted.
Seeing your unique and natural beauty get erased to "fit in" is so unfortunate. If achieving an ageless facade means transforming into a puffer fish or resembling some sort of feline creature, no thank you. Choose the alternative route: aging with grace. Embrace the natural process of aging with dignity, confidence, and a positive outlook on life. Instead of feeling ashamed of something natural, accept and celebrate the changes that come with getting older while maintaining a sense of self-worth, inner beauty, and self-assurance.
Aging with grace includes a holistic approach to physical and emotional well-being.
Embrace a Positive Mindset: Cultivate self-compassion and self-acceptance, understanding that aging is a beautiful part of life's unfolding story.
Maintain Physical Fitness: Engage in regular exercise, encompassing strength training, cardiovascular workouts, and flexibility exercises to support your overall vitality.
Prioritize Nutritional Self-Care: Nourish your body with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and wholesome foods.
By taking a more holistic approach, you'll age with grace that is filled with a sense of purpose, self-assurance, and a commitment to living life to the fullest. Celebrate the unique journey at every age.
Cheers to aging gracefully while being happy and healthy inside and out!
Comparison Trap 04/17/24
Comparison can interfere with your goals and cause problems in your daily activities. The "Comparison Trap" is all over the place when you compare your current situation to someone else. Avoid this trap! When you scroll and troll social media, you probably compare yourself to others. Let’s be real…you only see the highlight reel when they’re having the time of their lives (in which they are seeking some kind of attentions). Meanwhile it makes you feel like you are putting out fires while you work your tail off. It can make you feel worse about yourself or spark jealousy. Study after study has shown that people feel worse about themselves after spending time on social media. It does not always reflect reality. Yep, it had to be said. Focus on the quality of your life, not the quantity of your likes.
It’s almost impossible to be satisfied with your own situation if you’re constantly looking at someone else’s through a filtered photo or post. Instead of competing or comparing yourself to someone else, compare yourself to where you were and how far you have come. Spend that time and energy focusing on your own health and wellbeing. Pay attention to your family, friends, home, and the stuff in your life that really matters to you. If it helps you break out of the trap, make a list of things you have that someone else may be jealous of. Identify your blessings and be grateful for them.
Be your own competition. Bring your most confident and authentic self forward every day as you reflect on how far you've come. Hit your own PR instead of ranking yourself among others. Create the desire to propel yourself forward into your next level of growth. Focus on your own goals. Comparisons steal your joy and ability to be rational. Break out of the comparison trap because it’s a lonely place to reside and you can gain a healthier perspective on the outside of the trap.
Cheers to escaping the trap to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Bliss 04/10/24
Ignorance is bliss…but also temporary. Ignorance is sometimes bliss because someone who does not know about a problem does not worry about it. However, since ignorance is temporary, it will catch up with you. Ignorance protects you from suffering so that what you don’t know won’t hurt you (at this time) but it could hurt you in the future when truth and awareness hit you. Eventually, the tide will rise, and you may drown in reality. A more mature thought may be that knowledge is more blissful than ignorance because it leads to sustained, positive behaviors rather than the temporary peace based on self-deceit. Pure bliss is reached when you are fully connected with yourself and the world.
Whether you are informed or not is a choice, of course. As always, the key is balance. It is best not to be overwhelmed by either bliss or the potential doom in today’s chaotic world. You can be aware and still happy enough that you want to change the world for the better. Getting out of your comfort zone and taking action to learn something that you don’t fully understand can make you uncomfortable. But you can learn, i.e. become much more knowledgeable. Recent research suggests that positive behaviors like healthy eating and being physically active can enhance both your physical fitness and mental strength.
Bliss is an amplified emotion filled with joy, happiness, and feeling fulfilled. You must want to be that person who pursues that magnified emotional state of joy, fulfillment, and happiness rather than one that sits watching on the sideline. Our individual experiences are different and nearly all come with major life changes. Everyone will not experience bliss in the same way. Your outlook and demeanor shape how you will define your own bliss. Imagine living in such an amazing state. Living a blissful (knowledge-filled) life is achievable, if you believe it, practice gratitude, and pursue it with intention.
Cheers to pursuing bliss to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Make Someone Else’s Day Better 04/03/24
“That made my day" is a phrase indicating that someone's actions or words brought happiness to you by making a difficult day better. You may use it in a variety of situations, such as when someone does something nice for you, when you receive good news, or when you simply have a good day. It is usually a pleasant surprise or an unexpected act of kindness.
Give it a try. The benefits are mutual because by lifting someone else’s spirits, you make yourself feel better too. Provoke a positive change in emotion for someone else. When you show a little kindness, you encourage others to pass it on. If you like it when someone makes your day, then start by making someone else's day first. It doesn't have to cost anything other than a little thought, a few kind words, or a quick smile at just the right time.
Go ahead, make their day. Offer a compliment, pay for someone else’s coffee, say thank you or “I appreciate you”, catch someone doing something right and then outwardly recognize it, be a good listener, or extend words of encouragement. It doesn’t have to be expensive or extravagant to spread joy. Get creative and see if it uplifts your spirits in the process.
Cheers to better days to become happy and healthy inside and out!
AAA For The Win 03/27/24
Commitment to your goals does not happen all at once. It grows over time and can typically be broken down into a three-step process of Triple A: Awareness, Action, and Accountability. The steps need to happen in that order for the best outcome. As with most things, the process is relatively simple, but not easy.
Awareness. First comes awareness that change is needed because you can’t choose to change something if you are oblivious to the needed change. During those times when you are in your comfort zone, you are simply unconscious that a habit change is necessary. Patterns and weaknesses get buried without even realizing it. When you become aware, you understand the factors that are holding you back and then can consciously decide to do something else. Becoming aware creates many quick wins. Your actions improve when you actively observe them.
Action. The rubber hits the road when you are aware of what’s happening, and you become intentional about what you want to happen differently. You clearly define your strategy and what action(s) you want to take next. Then that clearly defined action helps you follow through on your good intentions. By minimizing (getting rid of) options, you hone in on the specific action that drives you to a precise strategy for reaching your goal.
Accountability. After you have become aware and taken action, the essential facilitator for change is accountability. It is the icing on the cake to set expectations. Accountability is the support you need to follow through on your commitments and defined actions. This is someone to “hold your hand” or “slap your hand” depending on what you need. It can be a friend, a coach, or yourself but accountability is the dynamic influence for habit change. Getting someone else invested in you success energizes you to do things that are uncomfortable or different, but in your best interest.
Cheers to A, A, and A to become happy and healthy inside and out.
Spring Cleaning Your Mindset 03/20/24
Spring has sprung! It brings the thought of new beginnings and the ritual of spring cleaning. It is so nice to be able to open the windows to let in the fresh air. Going beyond the dusting and wiping down surfaces, spring decluttering makes it easier to clean your home on an ongoing basis. The benefits of decluttering go far beyond the springtime. Keeping less “stuff” in your home brings a calmer and more peaceful environment by creating more space.
As you clear out your closets, ponder how you might declutter your mind of the thoughts and beliefs that may be holding you back. There may be clutter taking up too much space in your mind. Just as you dust and clean throughout your house, you should sweep out the negative thoughts of past failures and clean it up until you can shine with internal health and happiness. You are in charge of this spring cleaning and your mindset. You can make your days more clear, spacious, and less stressful. Swap out the “stuff” you don’t need and build a mindset that is spacious and filled with optimism.
Cheers to spring cleaning to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Go With No Regrets 03/13/24
Wouldn’t it be great to build a life that you’re absolutely thrilled to look back on when you are at the end of your time here on earth? The mission is living a life that is fulfilling and without regret. You want to decide your own path, not allow others’ expectations to dictate your direction. Be true to yourself by genuinely going after your own goals and passions.
Of course, there will need to be a balance among, work, fun, and life. Hard work is important but life it too short to work so much that you miss out on precious time with your friends and family. It’s important to let go of the grudges and to stay in touch with those who are special to you. Be aware of what will be significant in the end, not just in the moment. Stay connected with friends for some invaluable support. It takes effort when you are feeling overwhelmed and sooooo busy. Figure out what makes you happy every day and use that to feel fulfilled. Circumstances will appear as obstacles but challenge yourself to make adjustments so that when you reach the end of the road, you can feel aligned with your values and ditch the regrets.
Cheers to no regrets to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Use It Or Lose It 03/06/24
Get moving and stay moving. Any physical activity is better than no physical activity. Even a few minutes a day matter, and small changes lead to big improvements.
Strength training is critical as you get older because your lean muscle mass diminishes as you age. Our ancestors exercised more naturally through manual labor. The good news is that strength training can help you preserve and improve your muscle mass regardless of your age. Just like anything, you need to do the work to reap the reward. The benefits include but go far beyond vanity or weight loss. Consider an improved metabolism, stronger bones, quality of life, longevity, better sleep, and protecting your joints so you can do everyday activities with more ease.
The best recipe for improving physical function and avoiding age-related disability is a combination of walking and resistance training. When you do resistance or strength training, your body relays signals between cells that are affected, and these changes remain in the body for hours after exercise, which accumulates a positive effect for hours after you are done. Even a low-intensity strength and walking program has substantial benefits.
Additional perks include protecting your joints from injury, contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. With stronger muscles, you can reduce signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions like arthritis, back pain, obesity, heart disease, depression and diabetes. It can help prevent osteoporosis when you fuel the growth of muscle and bone. Who doesn’t want to feel better every day and delay these conditions that make you feel like you’re getting old? You don't need to spend hours a day lifting weights to get the benefits. You can significantly improve your strength with just two or three 20- or 30-minute strength training sessions a week. It’s worth the time investment.
Cheers to using your strength to stay happy and healthy inside and out!
Bounce Back 02/28/24
Three years ago today, I had an immense physical setback due to a skiing accident. If you didn’t read about it, you can scroll down to the post titled Taking a U-Turn on 3/10/2021. It was a doozy! However, it set me up for a bounce back. When you bounce back after a bad experience, you return very quickly to your previous level of enthusiasm or activity. I will probably never ski at 38 mph again, but I am back strong and did hit the slopes last year and again last week. What a thrill!
The definition of a bounce back is to start to be successful again after a difficult period. Bouncing back applies after experiencing an event or misfortune such as failure, loss of confidence, illness, or unhappiness. It means you can recover your health, good spirits, or confidence easily after a setback. When you bounce back you can return to an earlier condition and even improve upon it because you learn from the setback.
Resilience is your ability to adjust and bounce back when things don't go as planned. I certainly didn’t plan to crash on the mountain that day and fly back home in an immobilizer in excruciating pain. You can’t bounce back if you dwell on what went wrong. It requires taking a deep breath, acknowledging the situation, learning from it, and then committing to moving forward. Bouncing back is the ability to make a quicker recovery from difficulties and getting stronger after facing adversities. A resilient person does not avoid challenges, but rather, develops the ability to adapt, sustain, and come back with more courage. Resilience also improves your overall health and well-being.
Cheers to bouncing back to becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Rituals And Routines 02/21/24
Successful people don’t rely on inspiration and motivation. Rather, they diligently develop habits, rituals and routines to maintain steadiness for themselves. To be clear, leaders are not always the most inspired and motivated people. They are people who keep putting in the effort on days when they are not feeling inspired or motivated. It pays off to pay attention to what you do on the days you feel like resisting to persist. It becomes easy, almost automatic, to avoid tough tasks when you feel tired, anxious, or stressed.
If you stick to a morning routine, you can feel more in control of the rest of your day by going through the best habits and rituals to set you up for success. You will feel more self-confidence and reassurance when you stick to your healthy habits and routines. Trouble can come when you allow emotions to take over when you need to respond to uncertain circumstances. You have probably heard the theory that you can’t control every circumstance, but you can control how you respond to them. With solid rituals and routines in place, you have a structure and method to respond in a healthy way without your emotions taking over. Being able to stick to a pre-determined routine or habit helps you stay consistent and purposeful.
Cheers to routines that lead to being happy and healthy inside and out!
Share Love 02/14/24
In honor of Valentine’s Day, take a moment to express your love and appreciation. It will make you feel good inside and out when you tell someone that you appreciate them, love them, or that you are grateful for them. The sentiment does not have to be grandiose. One of the simplest and most effective ways to make your loved ones feel valued and respected is to say thank you. It can be done in person, over the phone, or through a text or email.
If it is not your natural tendency to say nice things, here are some quick and easy ideas:
-
You are special to me, and I treasure you.
-
Thank you for being an amazing friend to me.
-
Seeing you happy makes me happy.
-
Thank you for making my day brighter.
If you want to make it more personalized, say something about the person’s character qualities that you admire. Compliment their strengths and explain why you have high regard for them. Keep it short and sweet to show you are sincere. On this day of love, take in the moment and pay attention to the good things and show gratitude for your family, friends, spouse, or anyone special to you. A small gesture will be good for both you and the recipient.
Cheers to love and becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Practice Makes Permanent 02/07/24
Hopefully you are still practicing your proclaimed New Year’s resolution. You may have heard that practice makes perfect, but practice does not make perfect because nobody is perfect. However, practice makes permanent. This concept of practice makes permanent implies that you need to repeat an action many times for it to become a habit. Practice is no joke. It requires commitment, focus, repetition, breaking down your goals into smaller actions, understanding your why, and constant reminders to keep you moving forward. It all starts with your mindset that practice is required.
When it comes to developing healthy habits inside and out, repeating the desired behavior is critical. The more repetitions you do, the more likely it is to become a habit. When your behavior eventually becomes a habit, it will be much easier to maintain and make it permanent. You need to practice a new habit until it becomes automatic. This helps you find more efficient ways of doing things. Every rep counts.
It’s much easier to start from scratch and build a new habit than it is to break an old one. The key is to make the practice process as easy as possible for yourself to succeed. Decide and carefully plan to repeat your new behavior many times per week until it becomes second nature. Break it down into the steps required to make it to the gym, plan healthy meals, or whatever it is that you set your mind to do. Staying focused on each practice opportunity, one day at a time, will keep you from going backward. Practicing will build forward progress toward permanent.
Practice. Repeat. Practice. Repeat. Practice. Repeat.
Cheers to practicing to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Learn Rather Than Know What To Do 01/31/24
Akrasia: the state of acting against your better judgment; doing one thing even though you know you should do something else; procrastination or a lack of self-control. Akrasia is what prevents you from following through on your goals.
As a coach, one of the cringiest things to hear a client say is, “I know what to do, I just don’t do it.” The question is why? Well, knowing is knowledge. Learning is doing. You cannot accomplish anything through knowledge alone. Goals can only be attained through action.
Knowledge is having the information or being able to find it. Thank you, Google. Learning is the process of acquiring a new understanding (i.e. knowledge) and then changing your behavior. You haven’t learned anything by simply gathering knowledge until you take action and use it. One definition of learning is modification of behavior through practice, training, or experience. A coach can help clients uncover small action steps to make progress on their goals.
Jim Rohn brilliantly said, “Don’t let your learning lead to knowledge, let it lead to action.”
Back to the question of why is it so common to know what you should be doing but still struggle to do it? Some familiar reasons include fear of failure, feeling overwhelmed, or being stuck in a deeply rooted habit or routine. The feeling of fear will always be there, and the only solution is to just do it. You will never know if don’t try or you just sit inside your comfort zone, doing what you’ve always done. So get active learning, moving, and doing it.
Cheers to learning to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Waning Or Winning 01/24/24
Is your drive on new habits starting to wane in this new year? Waning means that the strength of your dedication is decreasing, or the intensity of your efforts may be slipping. It comes from the Old English verb wǫnian, which means "to lessen." The shiny newness might be starting to wear off and you may be losing interest in making the habit stick in your everyday routine. Hopefully this is not the case, and you are winning!
To prevent the waning, you first need to be aware that it is happening. The slipping may start slowly, and you don’t even notice. The challenge is to sustain the changes you have introduced for yourself. You may have been really motivated and consistent in Week 1. You pushed through and were persistent in Week 2. Then at some point, life happens, and it becomes difficult to sustain your level of commitment. It is oftentimes not a big moment where you just stop. Instead, it is a slow but sure slide into old habits. It is a gradual transition that you are not able to see if you’re not paying attention so you must set points of awareness to continue to meet your expectations. Become aware of the slip.
To set yourself up for success, stay crystal clear on your intentions and goals. Write down the standards you plan to keep, and the actions required to keep those standards. With this clarity, you will notice the slipping when it happens. Additionally, you won’t know if you are waning or winning if you don’t periodically review your performance. Keep track of your progress so that your intentions do not become out of sight, out of mind. Priority begins to wane when you don’t pay attention and may result in going back to your comfort zone. You need to keep yourself focused by consistently doing a gut check on how you are doing relative to your goals. Hold yourself accountable and prove you are winning.
Cheers to winning to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Persistence 01/17/24
Last week was all about consistency to stick with your New Year’s resolutions. Research shows that 23% of people quit their resolution by the end of the first week, and 43% quit by the end of January. When the going gets tough, tough get tougher…and the weak quit going. To be consistent is necessary in the beginning. Being persistent is necessary to continue to do something despite difficulties and challenges or opposition from others.
A persistent mindset involves determination to stick with something until you achieve your desired outcome such as fulfilling your New Year’s resolution. Persistence is important because it enables you to attack the obstacles that you may encounter. You should not let barriers or setbacks define you. Use failures as opportunities to learn, grow, and persist. When describing a persistent person, words that come to mind are determined, resilient, tenacious, driven, and committed. Being persistent means having the perseverance to continue pursuing a goal despite challenges, obstacles, or setbacks so that you can reach the outcome you are seeking.
Cheers to using persistence to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Consistency 01/10/24
Repetition is your friend when you are working on your habits and goals. Last week you may have made resolutions to make positive changes in your habits or start something new. How’s that going so far in the new year? The key is consistency to help you build momentum, improve habits, and stay focused on your intentions. Your likelihood of success increases when you consistently take small steps towards your goals. Regardless of your goal, consistency is crucial to progress in reaching it.
You know the saying a failure to plan is a plan to fail. Committing to a plan, scheduling small steps, and writing a to-do list will help you get on the right track and stay the course. You can get a sense of accomplishment each time you check off the tasks that you complete (over and over again). Consistency implies that you set a standard, that standard stays the same and it will become and remain more effective over time. As you work to be consistent, recognize your progress, no matter how small it may be, and keep moving forward toward your goals.
Cheers to consistently becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Start Fresh Then Keep Going 01/03/24
“Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” — Carl Bard
Many people see the new year as an opportunity for a fresh start. It is a time of hope that encourages you to set goals and make positive changes in your habits. If you have any doubt, just check out the gyms in your area to see how busy it is with those who are starting a new fitness routine. The new year is a cue that indicates a new beginning and a chance to move forward in a positive manner. You may see it as an opportunity to start a new chapter and leave past habits behind you. Go for it! Then move beyond the shiny new chance and make those habits stick.
Here are a few ways you might choose to form healthy habits inside and out that beyond January when most resolutions fade or fail.
1. Make your health a non-negotiable top priority.
Good health is the foundation of everything. Numerous quotes come to mind: “Health is not valued till sickness comes.” “The greatest wealth is health.” “A healthy outside starts from the inside.” “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters at all.” “You can have all the riches and success in the world, but if you don't have your health, you have nothing.” It starts with eating real food (avoid bags, boxes, and packaged stuff made in a factory with ingredients you can’t pronounce), getting in your steps or moving your body daily, and drinking plenty of water. Find a routine that works for you and then commit to sticking to it.
2. Include learning as a life-long habit.
Give your brain a regular workout. Try something you have always wanted to do or something you never thought you could pick up. A few suggestions include reading or listening to books, expanding your vocabulary by one new word a day, studying a foreign language even if just trying to learn a few phrases, playing Wordle, or doing crossword puzzles occasionally. Take a shot at any new skill to keep your brain active and fresh just like you exercise your body.
3. Develop an attitude of gratitude.
Being grateful is a simple effort that is good for your health. Research shows that counting your blessings reduces depression and stress, lowers blood pressure, produces higher levels of positive emotions, and improves vitality. It is as easy as thinking of three things for which you are grateful each day. You might choose something that is a constant in your surroundings, something specific to that day, or just that the sun shining that day.
Cheers to a fresh year of becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Play Your Cards Right 12/27/23
Some people are luckier than others. Everyone is dealt a hand in life. You were born into some circumstances, you were raised a certain way, you did what you did, and you have consequences based on your past actions. It could have been a fabulous hand of opportunities (aces), or it may have been a crappy hand (deuces) to start out. However, it's not about what you're given; it's about how you play the hand you are dealt. You can decide how you deal with experiences and not become a victim of circumstance. Rarely is there one hand dealt and the game is over.
Taking personal accountability will help you gain personal power. Don’t choose to see yourself as a loser who was dealt a bad hand. Take a good look in the mirror and be honest with yourself that whatever happens going forward is your responsibility. No more blaming those cards, your parents, the government, the town you grew up in, or anything else. Put the onus on yourself, along with the responsibility, to earn your happy because you deserve it. Then if your outlook doesn’t change over time, you likely have not made enough of the right changes. Go back to the drawing board and try, try, try again.
Of course, the hand you were dealt matters somewhat, but what matters more is what you do with your current circumstances to change your situation and to take control. Just because your ancestors were poor or unhealthy, you don’t have to be the same. There is a quote that says, “if you were born poor, it's not your fault. If you die poor, it's your fault.” Your consistent thoughts, actions and interactions matter for your health and your happiness. If you are miserable and keep telling yourself that, you will keep wallowing in the same reality while you perpetually take the same actions. The alternative is also true. You can change your habits, your routine, your job or your surroundings to make your days better. It comes down to how you play the cards you were dealt.
Cheers to a winning hand to become happy and healthy inside and out!

Listen To Learn 12/13/23
Reading is good for you. Research shows that regular reading improves brain connectivity, increases your vocabulary and comprehension, reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, fights depression, prevents cognitive decline as you age, and contributes to a longer life. If you are not a reader (like me), consider spending time listening to books or podcasts to keep learning. Create a list of books or topics that you would like to explore. Include fiction and non-fiction, a variety of topics, and even books you want to re-read or listen to again. If you are not sure listening is for you, start with books that really interest you.
I listen when I’m driving, on a walk, biking, cooking, flying on a plane, or whenever I can squeeze in some time to listen and learn. The Audible subscription price is worth the investment, and it makes the habit stick to continue listening. I didn’t realize how much I learned over the past year or so but my Listening List highlights some suggestions found on Audible with a brief review:
Everything is Figureoutable by Marie Forleo – Ditch your excuses. You can figure out a way to solve every problem that you encounter. There is always an alternative to the obstacle in front of you if you keep looking for a solution.
Rise by Lindsey Vonn – She is one tough lady. In this memoir she talks about the injuries she had to overcome which inspired me to get back out on the slopes after a life-changing injury of my own. She endured multiple setbacks and crashes which taught me that it can be done if you put in the work to recover and stay healthy.
Die with Zero by Bill Perkins - Live in the present to enjoy it rather than fearing the future and leaving a pile of assets when you die. This theory is thought-provoking when you consider the potential inheritance tax consequences for heirs. It is NOT about spending foolishly until you have nothing left! The book includes a formula for planning and using an abundance mindset. Spend to create cherished memories while ensuring financial security for the long term, including healthcare expenses.
Learn French with Paul Nobel for Beginners by Paul Noble – I failed to get through this one. I didn’t stick with it long enough to be able to speak with the locals when I traveled to France. It was worth a try. I picked up a few key words and phrases, but my focus was not intentional enough when I was listening. I learned that it’s OK to move on to the next learning opportunity.
Scars and Stripes by Tim Kennedy – Raw, vivid, sometimes disturbing memories are shared with plenty of profanity from the decorated Green Beret sniper and UFC fighter. He tells about embracing failures like being kicked out of the police department, fire department and as an EMT but going on to being a hero in multiple missions in Afghanistan, building a school in Texas, and creating successful businesses. He is a Special Forces superstar who tells it like it is and has overcome setbacks that make most Americans’ lives seem super simple.
Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing by Matthew Perry – An autobiography with plenty of rough times experienced by the happy-go-lucky Chandler Bing. This story gives perspective that everything bright and shiny in stardom (or social media) is not what is going on in real life. His upbringing contributed to rough times, but he also takes accountability for his actions leading to his unhealthy lifestyle and the consequences.
Never Finished by David Goggins – Mind over matter. Warning: this includes some graphic and hard reality checks. David uses mental toughness to overcome more than any average whiner could ever imagine. He recalls how he overcame physical incapability to reach unbelievable accomplishments.
Lucky Man by Michael J. Fox – Parkinson’s Disease is rough at any age but imagine the diagnosis at age 30. His character Alex P. Keaton was funny and quirky. Reality hit with the diagnosis MJF hid for 10 years while he timed his medication to mask the shaking and other symptoms. He has become the face of Parkinson’s to the world and the story is fascinating if you’re curious to learn more about him and the disease.
Atomic Habits by James Clear – Get serious about changing your routines and reaching your goals. The premise is that small incremental changes will add up tremendously over time to get results. Make it easier rather than making excuses.
Greenlights by Matthew McConauhey – Interesting guy with a life that has meandered through a lot of stuff. He tells about some crazy things that happened to him and how he overcame adversity.
You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero – Change your mindset and your habits to overcome obstacles. This book is full of funny scenarios she conquered, encouragement for when you’re down and out, and advice on how to build a happy life for yourself.
Cheers to learning to be happy and healthy inside and out!
Feel Accomplished 12/06/23
Oftentimes you are focused on what’s next. You feel like you can’t get ahead and you are always behind in the rat race of daily activities. Now is the time to pause and to celebrate what is going right and what you have achieved. As we are coming to the end of the year, take a few moments (like just 10 minutes) to brainstorm a list of your accomplishments to appreciate all that has happened in the past 12 months. You might just be stunned how much has been done and you accomplished so much more than you were giving yourself credit.
Breathe deeply. Try not to focus on your faults or shortcomings. To recognize your victories, big or small, give this exercise a try:
-
Get piece of paper or open a new Word document
-
Set a timer for 10 minutes
-
Start writing down all the things you have accomplished over the past 12 months (refer to your calendar or your phone photos if you need a refresher!)
-
Read over your list
-
Feel gratitude and appreciation for yourself
You have come so far in the last 12 months. It’s worth taking a moment to celebrate this chapter of your life before the next one begins.
Cheers to your progress on becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Yesterday Is Gone 11/29/23
Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today, let us begin. – Mother Teresa
Let’s get real. There is no changing the past because it is finished or final. You will not benefit from worrying or stressing about something that has already happened. You may not have gotten the outcome you wanted, but what's done is done. That is really hard to accept when you cannot change something that has already happened, but you should try to stop letting past incidents or failures get you down.
Maybe you ate or drank too much on Thanksgiving. Maybe you skipped multiple days of workouts. Maybe you held a grudge too long. Maybe you binged way too much Netflix instead of getting fresh air. As Elsa sings in Frozen, “Let It Go!”
It is more important that you are motivated now, and that you build momentum to get moving forward on your goals and to better yourself. You can't change the past, so don’t bother to ruminate in it. There is no going back and recreating the exact same scenario. The way to reshape your mindset and wipe away disappointment is to put one foot in front of the other. The winning combination is to learn from it, reset your intentions, and move on so you can see through to your goal. Make the most of the present because you can’t go back but you can move forward.
Cheers to moving forward to becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Give Thanks 11/22/23
This Thanksgiving week is the perfect time to reflect on the values instilled by your family. Those who love you will always want the best for you through thick and thin. As you gather for the holiday, cherish the history of past family gatherings and be grateful for the memories that hold you together. There undoubtedly has been kindness extended to you so be prepared to show appreciation for it and to return kindness.
Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, not only for the delicious food but also for the precious time with your loved ones. As you appreciate the abundance on our tables, also be thankful for the happiness that has been shared. Respect the past and look forward to the future with optimistic expectations. During this season of togetherness, remember the importance of family values.
As you celebrate, don't forget the significance of being healthy inside and out. Nurture and nourish your body while being mindful of your well-being during the festivities. May your Thanksgiving be filled with smiles, laughter, and cherished moments.
Cheers to gratitude and family values of being happy and healthy inside and out!
Emotions and Logic 11/15/23
When your emotions run too high, your logic will be low, which can lead to irrational thinking and behavior. Excitement can cause you to overestimate your confidence of success. Conversely, you are likely to set your goals lower when you feel unhappy. Creating low expectations for yourself can prevent you from reaching your fullest potential. The more aware you become of your own emotions, the sooner you can regulate them.
Emotion comes before thought (i.e. logic) and you always feel before you think. Everyone has probably done some emotional eating only to realize those cookies, piece(s) of cake, pizza, or the bag of chips disappeared before your logic kicked in. Another emotional mishap may be a text or an email you wish you could take back when your typing was likely filled with emotions. The best choice is trying to recognize the overflowing emotions when they are influencing your behavior in a less-than-ideal way.
Ultimately, emotions can change the way you think and behave so your logic will usually be affected by emotions. Those wild emotions can make you think in illogical ways and override rationality. Elevate your logic and reduce your emotional reactiveness by taking a deep breath and weighing the pros and cons of your actions. This should lead to more emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and being able to manage your emotions for better decisions.
Cheers to more logic to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Fear Not 11/08/23
Did you know that you can’t feel fear and gratitude at the same time? However, you can make a choice to replace one with the other. When you are grateful, fear disappears, and abundance appears. Fear can keep you confined to staying comfortable and predictable, but it prevents you from reaching your real potential. Living in fear causes a feeling of being unfulfilled with your current situation but scared to seek anything better. Fear keeps you stuck. The challenge is to not live in fear because it can lead to avoiding necessary challenges that will move you forward.
Ask yourself this important question: what would I do if I had no fear? It requires you to decide that your dreams and goals are more important than your fear of failure. Don’t let excuses keep you in your comfort zone when you are living in fear because they make you feel safe. Stop making excuses and seeing obstacles that stop you from even getting started. Fear diminishes when you see the world as a place of opportunity, not obstacles. Make the decision to master your fears and start becoming the happiest, most successful version of yourself possible.
When you do let go of fear, there is one hard truth that will need to be accepted: you will fail at some point as part of the process. Some failure is inevitable but it provides insights into what needs to be corrected in approaching a problem. Don’t let fear or failure stop you from learning a valuable lesson in resilience. With the right mindset, you can say goodbye to living in fear.
Cheers to no fears to becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Three C’s to Confidence 11/01/23
The truth is that it's nearly impossible to feel confident before you take action. Confidence is a result of taking action.
Define what you really want to achieve. Then there are 3 specific steps you can take to reach the result of feeling confident to attain it.
Step #1: Commitment
-
Make a 100% commitment to something that gets you closer to what you want
-
Make sure you are “all in”
-
On a scale of 1-10, raise your commitment level to a 20
Step #2: Courage
-
Once you commit, challenges will arise
-
Map out how you might navigate the challenges or fears
-
If you need help, seek out a coach or mentor
Step #3: Capability
-
Once you have committed and shown courage, you will be in action and developing the capabilities you need to become successful
-
Capabilities are necessary skills, knowledge or experience
-
When you have developed your capabilities, your confidence will skyrocket
Cheers to gaining confidence to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Self-Motivation 10/25/23
Sometimes it is hard to stay focused on your goals and easy to find reasons to let your motivation slip. A healthy dosage of motivation combined with determination is just what the coach ordered to get you almost anything you desire. The key is that you get genuinely motivated with this remedy. Motivation is the medicine that constantly reminds you why you do what you do.
Here are the examination notes from your coach:
1. Diagnose Your Motivator
When you uncover your personal motivator, you’ll find that motivation streams easily. Give it some deep thought to make it personal.
2. Write The Prescription
Write down your motivator and post it where you will see it often. Use it as powerful tool, like your GPS to maintain your focus and direction.
3. Practice The Right Dosage
Make a game plan and break down the steps to how you will make progress. Athletes don’t win (or lose) games on one play. It takes a strategy and individual steps to play the game, practice the routine and make it something you can enjoy rather than forcing something you hate.
4. Stock Up Alternative Methods
Recruit support from friends, family, and a coach to hold you accountable. You will find support and maybe have them join you to make healthy changes themselves. Together is better to identify what motivates you and to follow through on it.
Cheers to your motivation to become happy and healthy inside and out!
One Body 10/18/23
Jim Rohn was a big influencer in personal development who lived 1930-2009. His advice is timeless. He once said:
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”
You could move out of your neighborhood, distance yourself from friends or family, change your job, etc. However, your body is the one thing that will always be with you, no matter what you do or who you become. Regardless of what you want to accomplish, you must prioritize your health. You only have one body and there is no back-up body if you mistreat the one currently your live in. If you don’t take care of it, your body will start to give in or react negatively. Conversely, if you eat nutritious food, fill your mind with positive thoughts and respect yourself with regular exercise, you will be privileged with health and lively years to do the things you want to do. Taking care of your personal health comes down to self-respect.
To simplify:
-
Eat real food, not convenience packaged or processed junk
-
Give gratitude daily to lift your attitude
-
Move your body every day rather than staying stagnant
-
Encourage others to do the same by setting an example
Cheers to your body becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
Boring 10/11/23
Sometimes your days or your job may get boring. It can be a time when things are so dull and uninteresting that you feel tired, impatient, or drained by the dullness. If you allow your routine to become boring, stale, and monotonous, you might just be in a rut. When you have not altered what you do or how you do it for a very long time, you may need to initiate a change.
Making a change is not always easy. Even though you wonder about being happier when you make a change, it is more comfortable to stay the same and sulk about it. Progress can be the major key to happiness even if that progress is small. When you are moving forward you feel satisfied, happy, and prepared for battle because your mission is clear. Managing the unavoidable ruts requires persist growth, discovery, and recognizing that progress.
A few things to keep in mind when you need to pull up your bootstraps and get out of a rut:
-
Spontaneity feeds your brain’s love for novelty and independence. It sparks dopamine which naturally generates motivation even if it is only a short burst.
-
Perfection is not possible nor is it necessary. Done is better than perfect. Stop waiting until the circumstances are perfect. More importantly, stop trying to portray to others that everything in your own world is already perfect.
-
Change something visible as a reminder to keep digging out of your rut. It can be as simple as a haircut or taking a different route for your normal walk or drive but recognize the creative difference to get out of a boring rut. Prove to yourself that anything is possible.
It doesn’t have to be boring, change can be fun.
Cheers to smoothing out the ruts to become happy and healthy inside and out!
The Power Of Why 10/04/23
Whypower is not a typo for willpower nor a replacement. Whypower is superior to willpower. The term whypower has been around for years but it is recently new to me and worth sharing. Whypower goes beyond just surface level wanting to do something. It is more deeply rooted and personal so it takes some thought to figure it out for yourself. Using your whypower is fully understanding why you are doing something and using that as motivation to act upon your goals. Willpower may get you started, but whypower keeps you going.
Your why is different from everyone else’s why and you control your own whypower. You may need to ask yourself a lot of questions to find your why, but it will eventually become clear when you feel strong enough emotions that move you. Sometimes it includes who is important in your future or what you want to do in your future to make you want to live a healthy lifestyle. It is the reason behind your dreams of the ideal future. The idea is that your willpower may get you through a short sprint, but using your whypower is making small choices daily to help you finish a marathon.
It takes a lot of little steps to complete a marathon. Those small steps may include getting up earlier, eating the fruit instead of a donut, scheduling the dreaded next step into your calendar so it does not get skipped. Keep your promises to yourself and always remind yourself of your why to invoke that whypower along the way. Connect to your whypower in good times and in bad times. Leverage that whypower!
Cheers to WHYPOWER to become happy and healthy inside and out!
You’re Not On A Deserted Island 09/27/23
Some days you feel like you have to do everything yourself if you want it to get done. The truth is that you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Survival includes getting help from others. Each individual person is like a part of the bigger picture, a piece to a puzzle, rather than a deserted self-sufficient island and cut off from the rest of the world. Beyond survival, allowing others to assist you may lead to thriving beyond your expectations. You are not stranded. Find an dependable cohort or coach to help you reach your goals.
Acknowledging you need help and asking for it may feel uneasy because you must give up some control when rely on someone else. You may find this difficult and feel like you are losing some independence. The reality is that no one is 100% self-sufficient and everyone relies on others for something. As much as you want to do it all, you need to be supported, especially when things seem out of control. You need social connections, and your actions affect those around you. Sometimes it takes swallowing your pride to ask for help, but the hard truth is that no one is self-reliant and, yes, people rely on each other. Ask for help if you need it.
Cheers to depending on others to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Sleep On It 09/20/23
In the busy-ness of your daily routine, you may be missing an important remedy to make you feel better and keep your immune system in tip-top shape. Sleep has been proven to help develop your immunity so you can stay healthy inside and out. A good night of sleep can benefit you the following day. The compound effect of adding plenty of good nights’ sleep can make a world of difference in your health, weight, blood pressure, diabetes, and physical performance. Conversely, missing out on good sleep affects your ability to remember, concentrate, and make good decisions. Lack of sleep has even been connected to a higher risk of heart disease and dementia. Yikes!
Sleep is as important to good health as diet and exercise. Everything in your body uses sleep as a time for repair including your blood vessels. Getting quality sleep requires winding down before going to bed. You wouldn’t rev your engine and race your car at 70 mph and expect it to stop instantly when you hit the brakes. It takes time to gradually slow down and come to a halt. Your body needs similar consideration to decelerate and come to rest. This means a routine to put away the phone, stop revving the engine with fuel (food), pump the brakes and let yourself ease into a calm state so you can fall asleep with ease. A few other tips include going to bed and rising at roughly the same time each day, darkness and quiet in your bedroom, avoid caffeine after noon, take relaxing minerals like magnesium and calcium, or listen to calming music or white noise sounds to help you go to sleep. Set yourself up to get the solid rest you need.
Cheers to sleeping well to be happy and healthy inside and out!
Do It For The Health Of It 09/13/23
Train to be strong, not skinny.
Eat to be nourished, not thin.
Workout to build, not burn.
You have one body. Don’t spend your whole life tearing it down in the name of looking better. Direct your effort and energy into caring for it, fortifying it and cultivating strength.
As the saying goes, “If all you care about is looking better, it may cost you your health. But if you care about your health, you’ll probably love the way you look.” - @coachdannym
Cheers to doing it to become happy and healthy inside and out!
The Truth Is What It Is 09/06/23
You may use this saying regularly or you may be annoyed when it has been used on you but, “It is what it is.” The truth is precisely as it is, you can’t make it up or fake it, and you are always held accountable for it. Sometimes the truth hurts but it is what it is.
Of course, there are plenty of liars and cheaters you have probably encountered. Nonetheless, you cannot fake the truth. Someone can tell a convincing alternative story, and it may even seem believable, but it has consequences that will come back at some time. There is no such thing as “stretching the truth.” Remember, it is what it is. You can’t lie to yourself either.
You may be able to lead others to really believe almost anything, but you can’t convince yourself to do so. Deep down you know the reality, aka the truth, which causes a disconnect to influence your environment and brings more of it back into your life. The ramifications start to build up and the un-truths start to unravel. The word karma comes to mind. Bad things don’t always come out of lying, but you were probably coached in childhood to always tell the truth. There is massive wisdom in that teaching. Consider it a universal law.
The next time you want to concoct a story or share an un-truth, ponder what kind of energy it will generate for you down the road. Is it helping you move forward or causing future negative consequences? Just face the truth because it is what it is.
Cheers to the truth to become happy and healthy inside and out!
You Can’t Turn Back Time 08/30/23
Time marches on. You may find yourself wishing things were the way they used to be or frustrated with your current situation. This, my friend, is a waste of energy. You need that energy to move forward. The truth is that there is no going back so just turn around and keep moving forward. It is easy to look at old photos or recall your favorite memory. These are cherished times, but you can’t go back to where you were before.
You may be feeling the bumps in the road, but that is also the path of new opportunities and adventure if you're open to them. Take the lessons from your past with you. Let go of what is no longer serving you. Stay focused on moving forward on your path.
Cheers to moving forward to happy and healthy inside and out!
Your Outfit Does Matter 08/23/23
“The most important thing you’ll ever wear is your attitude.” – Jeff Moore, CEO of Everyday Power
Every day you decide what clothes you want to wear. Likewise, you can choose your attitude to start your day. It is easier said than done, but on the days when life is more hectic, you can consciously choose to be patient to minimize the potential stress caused by the chaos. On busy days, you can choose to be helpful and more supportive. You can choose an attitude that will empower you, not destroy you. A best-dressed attitude will help you navigate the ups and downs of life which will also help you relate to others more effectively.
Your attitude is your way of thinking or feeling about something and it gets expressed through your behavior. Choosing to have a good attitude can be very intentional. Again, easier said than done, but trying to reduce the bias of your emotions will affect your moment-by-moment decision making. When you convince yourself in advance about the attitude you want to portray about things, it will influence the way you feel in the moment about them.
As you take time getting ready in the morning to choose your outfit, brush your teeth, and whatever you need to do to start the day…also decide what attitude you want to wear for the day. Try it on and see how it looks on you, because a good attitude just might be your favorite!
Cheers to wearing a good attitude to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Important People And Things 08/16/23
It is likely that you know of those things or those people who make you laugh a little louder, cause your heart to swell a little bigger, make your smile a little happier, and set off your days a little healthier. These things or people bring the sunshine to your rainy days and have a light of their own. The more you take the time to appreciate them, the more you realize who and what really matters. The people you admire and respect can say a lot about you and your values.
Take a moment to let that sink in. As you were reading it, did certain objects, friends or family come to mind? Maybe you should think about them more often. Recognize them for what they do for you. Take just a few minutes to make a list of five people for whom you have the highest regard. Next, add to the list what you appreciate or admire about them. It will bring even more smiles and optimism to your day. Little pleasures are all around you and are just waiting to be noticed and appreciated.
On the flip side, there are those things and people who drain you. They simply are not healthy for you and should be avoided. It may be hard to eliminate someone who has been close to you for a very long time. If they no longer make you laugh, make your heart swell, or make you smile, it may be time to sever the relationship or at least distance yourself. As they say with the boat that is stuck, “Cut the anchor,” and move on.
Cheers to important things and people making you happy and healthy inside and out!
Getting Grounded 08/09/23
This is not about being in trouble as a teenager and being grounded by your parents. To “stay grounded” means being able to stay calm, centered, and connected to the core of who you are when there is uncertainty or insecurity. You don’t allow the external chaos to control you but rather you fully control your own emotions, thoughts, values, and the vision you have for the current situation.
I had the challenge of getting and staying grounded when my daughter got married this weekend. It was a spiritual and exciting time to challenge myself to be fully present. There were snafus during the week leading up to the wedding and on that day that could have caused major angst. So it was not without struggle, but I fought to not worry about the future or judge the past because incidents were tugging to take me out of the present moment, and the present moment was all that really mattered on that day. It was a spectacular day, and I took many deep breaths when I was flooded with emotions to help me realize what was truly important and what was simply a distraction.
Studies have shown that grounding can lead to health advantages, including decreased pain, better sleep, and increased composure. When you are ungrounded you may feel frantic, stressed, easily distracted, or disconnected from yourself. If you are not grounded, you are vulnerable and thrown off balance very quickly. Your mind races so you can't focus on any one thing, and you can feel tired and wired at the same time. When this happens, go back to deep breathing exercises, or take a walk barefoot to bring yourself back to a natural state of calm and level-headedness. Getting back to being grounded allows you to become your own energy source, drawing on a strong foundation within yourself. It allows you to access your talents and your inner power. Enjoy the moment and leave the distractions behind to get back to what matters the most.
Cheers to getting grounded to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Feeling Funky 07/26/23
It is common that some days feel better than others. You have days when you are on top of the world, focused, productive, and have lots of energy. Then you may have one of those days when things seem off or you are just not quite yourself. Call it being in a funk or stuck in a rut. It is a sense of being off-kilter, lacking motivation or overall contentment. You have plenty of reasons to be grateful but it can be challenging to shake off.
Here are some tips to help get you back on track.
-
Realize that it is part of the process. Stop lamenting about what “should” be happening and what is really going on. This creates unnecessary tension. Being in a funk isn’t necessarily good or bad, it just is. Accepting that it’s part of normal life reduces that unnecessary stress. What you resist persists.
-
Move your body to shake it off. Exercise and physical activity give the most immediate benefits on your mental health and your mood. Go for a walk, put on a happy music playlist, do a few jumping jacks, step outside for fresh air or whatever it takes. Movement changes your state of mind.
-
Recall what is going well and make a list. It is much easier to dwell on what is going wrong but it it is much more important and relative to reflect on things for which you are grateful. It may not be an immediate gratification, but it will help bring things back into perspective.
-
Do something, almost anything. Motivation might be hard to find when you are in a funk. Start with something simple to create momentum with an action you can accomplish quickly. It can be as easy as cleaning your room or making a quick phone call you have been avoiding. Checking things off your to-do list can feel so satisfying. It sounds too easy, but it works.
Cheers to feeling less funky to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Golden Hours 07/19/23
Professional photographers often cherish the hour before sunset and call it the golden hour because of the fabulous lighting in photos. The golden hour actually happens twice per day. It includes the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset because the color of the sky goes from red and orange to yellow so there is softer sunlight compared to other times of day when the sun is higher in the sky.
So that first hour of the day is the golden hour is to get stuff done. Go ahead, rise and shine. The beautiful sky should be encouragement to wake up and start your day to start doing something productive. Even if it is just 15 minutes to take a walk, enjoy a cup of coffee in silence, read a book, listen to a podcast, call a friend, or write. But for heaven’s sake, do not pick up your phone to mindlessly scroll. It is the best (golden) time of day to act lively and do well for yourself.
The way in which you spend the first hour after you rise will set the tone for the rest of your day. Make it worthwhile and have a positive effect on your mood, motivation, and your health. Bring on supercharged energy and positive vibes. Even yoga or stretching can be beneficial for your metabolism and mental clarity to set you on the right path for the day. Pay attention for the next week how you spend your first hour of the day and see if you can identify the good or the not-so-good habits that you include during your golden hour. It is your time to shine.
Cheers to golden hours to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Priorities 07/12/23
Do you find yourself doing, going, and hustling only to feel like you are going in circles and not getting anywhere? Take a look at what you are doing, where you are going and what tasks you are hustling so hard to accomplish. Are they the right things or are they just stuff? It is important to make a conscious effort to focus on the most critical things to create the most significant results. Get your priorities straight. Priorities will guide you in decisions and keep you on track.
First, you must decide what is the most important thing you want to accomplish or attain. Make that the priority in each task you do or step you take toward it. Every day, create a list of two or three most important things (MITs), and focus on getting them done as soon as possible. Don’t be distracted by the emails, social media scrolling or the easiest mundane tasks just to say you go something done.
Another tactic is to schedule them with a deadline. Make an appointment in your calendar to work on your MITs even if it is for just 30 minutes. Keep it simple but dedicated without remorse for spending the time on it if it is important to you. You don’t have time to do everything so set the cutoff time to complete your MITs with urgency and feel the
success of doing it.

The Kid In You 07/05/23
Allowing the kid in you to emerge occasionally may help you see the world in new ways, step outside your comfort zone, and open possibilities for you. Take another trip down memory lane to all the fun you had when you were a kid without responsibilities, running free in the summertime without a rigid schedule, hanging out with friends and giggling, or getting into just enough trouble that you didn’t get hurt. Hopefully those memories bring a smile to your face with thoughts of good times. We could all benefit from a little more fun and games in our adult days too. The challenge is not to remember “the good old days” as distant memories that cannot be recreated. Alternatively, bring back some of that livelihood just for the health of it.
You never fully grow up so when you allow yourself to act like a kid once in a while, it can make you feel energized, excited and inspired. It’s okay if you do some meaningless activities that feel somewhat childish or silly. Let some fun in to potentially bring joy to your day. It can be a source of your creativity when you read a favorite childhood book, visit the park where you played, dare to participate in a sport that you haven’t tried in eons. Don’t let the voice in your head tell you that you are too old to have fun. Physical activity can help reduce stress, and the experience will remind you of that carefree lifestyle.
Cheers to kidding around to become happy and healthy inside and out!
You Are Rich 06/28/23
Keeping it short and sweet this week with a message that is priceless:
Be thankful and remember your family is priceless, your time is gold, and your health is wealth.
Believe in yourself and cherish those assets. You are rich!
Cheers to being rich while becoming happy and healthy inside and out!
AAA 06/21/23
At first glance you may have thought today’s topic was the American Automobile Association (AAA) for roadside assistance or discounts at hotels. Nope, it is about three levels of daily engagement and working toward making yourself to the highest level of availability. The levels relate to how conscious you are while going about your day and working toward your goals. Keeping it simple, let’s define the three A’s for reference.
Awake: coming alive and being perceptive of the world around you. This is the time when you’re not asleep, but you have minimal consciousness. You just roll out of bed in the morning, turn on the light and move slowly or you are so tired that you’re just going through the motions to get through the day.
Aware: showing realization, perception, or knowledge of your surroundings. It implies that you are actively observing or alert to learn from your experiences. Note that this is the state of consciousness where you spend most of your life. This is the time you create solutions, a better understanding of things and make better choices than when you are simply awake. You engage in challenging conversations. Everyone should strive to be more aware.
Available: displaying an elite level of consciousness, able to block out distractions, and take an idea that is presented to pursue a solution. Someone in this state is qualified and willing to act while assuming full responsibility for those actions. Think of this as giving someone/something your undivided attention to be present in the moment. This should be the mission when you want to be your best.
It is not humanly possible to always to be in the available state of consciousness. However, striving to squeeze in more of this level for your friends, family, goals, and livelihood is definitely worthwhile.
Cheers to becoming more available to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Prioritize Exercise 06/14/23
It can be easy to allow time to get away from you during summer months due to vacations, kids being home, and other warm weather distractions. You have planned fun things to do and exciting places to visit. Don’t let these be reasons (aka excuses) to avoid or stop working out. There are so many more reasons to exercise than excuses to avoid it.
Exercise makes you stronger, reduces your stress and boosts your energy. With consistency, exercise makes your clothes fit better, which gives you confidence and makes you feel amazing. Besides all the feel-good benefits, you can reduce blood pressure, increase your insulin sensitivity, and improve your overall health. How can you say no to all those perks? Don’t let time slip away from you and get moving to feel better while the days are longer and you can enjoy moving our body. Use it or lose it.
Whether you believe it or not, exercise can really be enjoyable. Take a stroll down memory lane to remember how fun it was to run and jump as a child. Channel that inner child to find enjoyment in moving your body through fun activities that involve exercise. It would be great to have some of you join me at one of the gyms where I exercise so we can work out together for a free session. Such a variety of exercise is available so there is something for everyone. Visualize how amazing you will be looking and feeling when you ditch the excuses this summer.
Cheers to exercising to become happy and healthy inside and out!
4-H Flashback 06/07/23
I was reflecting this week and had a flashback to my middle school days when I was in the local 4-H club. If you grew up on a farm in Iowa, you could relate. During this flashback I remembered dreading the memorization and the sole purpose was to avoid being embarrassed during the monthly meeting for being unable to recite it. I was able to repeat the pledge with some friends even though it had not been on my mind in so many years. It astonishingly means so much more now than it did in my childhood. The wording is simply profound. The pledge says,
“I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service,
And my health to better living,
For my club, my community, my country, and my world.”
Wow! Let those concepts sink in. If everyone followed this simple pledge daily, the whole universe would be a better place.
Cheers to pledging to become happy and healthy inside and out!
Not-So Picture-Perfect 12/18/24
Are you living in the present or buried in screen time? Social media has been filling up with people showing off their perfect holiday moments. This is wonderful to see old and new friends enjoying their celebrations. The Pinterest-Perfect collage of photos is not real life in many ways. They didn’t all wake up Instagram-Worthy with perfectly styled hair and makeup to sip their hot cocoa by the fireplace with simple peace and quiet. Their to-do list was not completely cleared before the glorious sun came up. If your daily schedule looks like that, congratulations! But let’s be real. Most days are a bit more chaotic than the perfectly posed Facebook photo (usually with a filter) so don’t let this fool you or make you feel inadequate for one minute.
You are marvelous at what you do even if it feels like mayhem to balance work, family, health and happiness. Be mindful to carve out a little time for you. Stay on track with your routines as much as possible. Everything is not and does not need to be perfect. Remember the reason for the season and remind yourself that social media is not always what it seems. The perfect pic does not need to be taken or posted for you to be a success. Please don’t fake it when you take it. If you get one you like, post it and share your joy with the world, by all means! Remind yourself that your presence (not the presents or the post) is what really matters. When you are at your best, you bring the best to others.
Cheers to a not-so picture-perfect holiday to be happy and healthy inside and out!
5-5-7 For Calmness 12/11/24
When you are feeling overwhelmed (‘Tis the Season), take a moment to get yourself on track and lower your racing heart rate. Take a big deep breath in for five counts, hold for five, exhale for seven. Count out each beat and do it a few times until you feel a little bit more calm. With all the holiday parties, friendly gatherings, shopping, and other obligations, you may feel stressful times setting in. The running from here to there doesn’t stop and the season seems to be turning into a whirlwind. Now is the perfect time to take care of yourself and your health and happiness inside an out.
Take a few moments to keep your energy and sanity in check. Take (i.e. make) 15 minutes per day to do something helpful for you. Schedule it in your calendar and set a timer to make sure you do it. This can be reading, stretching or simply doing the 5-5-7 breathing exercise. Next, keep your workouts sacred or, at a minimum, keep your step goal. It doesn’t have to be intense but get in some steps at the mall or around the block to keep your blood flowing. The third non-negotiable is to fuel your body with balanced meals even when your days seem chaotic. A little planning goes a long way when you keep your blood sugar balanced with protein, healthy fats and carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables. Don’t let yourself get hangry! Focus on staying on track as much as possible to avoid starting the new year all over again.
Cheers to deep breaths to stay happy and healthy inside and out!
